Eating in a college town is always easy/easier for me, as vegetarian options are plentiful. Last week I had dinner with friends in Lawrence, Kansas at 715. While not one of the veggie-centric restaurants I frequent in Lawrence, it was a delicious dinner!
My friend Deanne made the dinner reservation via OpenTable and noted that one of our party was a gluten-free vegetarian. The restaurant didn’t respond or cancel the reservation so I was hopeful they could accomodate my limitations. Either that or they pay no attention to what comes through on OpenTable.
Our server was very friendly but made no mention of the notation on our reservation. Not that I expected this, but I keep hoping for this experience, a restaurant who pays attention to the information on the reservation and follows through from beginning to end. This would sure set my mind at ease.
I chose to order three vegetables from the menu (one entree option is to make a meal from three vegetable offerings). I asked if the items I ordered were all gluten-free. Our server said she thought so but would ask in the kitchen. I told her if a substitution was necessary, I was okay with that and would happily eat whichever vegetable offerings were gluten-free. She responded with, “I love that!” I hoped the kitchen staff did, too. I’m really flexible and don’t want to step on a chef’s toes or culinary creativity. I want to have a good meal that is safe for me, that’s all.
A good meal that was safe for me was exactly what I got! I started with the assorted olives:
My entree included rosemary yukon gold potatoes, broccoli with calabrian chiles and blistered cauliflower. The plate was overflowing with veggie goodness. The potatoes were cooked perfectly, no mushy or greasy spuds here! The broccoli had a tiny bit of spice thanks to the chiles. The blistered cauliflower was topped with crunchy onions. It was a perfectly seasoned meal (no S&P necessary here) and filling. I renewed my Clean Plate Club membership at 715!
I’m currently taking a break from most dairy and didn’t try this, but thought I would share another gluten-free option from the menu. My husband had the assorted cheese platter, which came with a crostini on a separate plate. You could ask for no crostini.
715 was a lovely place for dinner with friends. I would definitely eat there again. Even a restaurant that gets a whole pig delivered every week can provide a delicious gluten-free vegetarian meal!
