This week I went to a dinner meetup of the #BlogKC group at Blue Koi. Gatherings like this can be hard for gluten-free folks, not all restaurants are accommodating or aware of our needs. Add to that the challenge of a group of 20+ people ordering at the same time and the potential for being served gluten-full food is high. Blue Koi is a beautiful exception to this. I had an amazing gluten-free, vegetarian meal with a group of fun bloggers.
Before I was gluten-free, I liked eating at Blue Koi because the menu has always been clearly marked for vegetarians. Now I request their special “allergy” menu that lists items containing peanuts as well as a few other allergens. The bottom 2/3 of the menu is dedicated to wheat/gluten free menu items, detailing what substitutions should be requested. There are 3 or 4 entrees that are both gluten-free and vegetarian, in addition to a couple of starters. It is truly easy to order gluten-free and vegetarian at Blue Koi.
On this visit to Blue Koi, I chose Vegan Delights, vegetable broth with large slices of tofu, tofu ribbons, cabbage, carrots, daikon and rice noodles. The broth was hearty, butter-y, a little sweet and one of my favorite comfort foods. The large slices of tofu were a bit awkward to cut in a bowl of broth, the small plate our server dropped by was much appreciated so I could maintain some semblance of socially appropriate behavior on my first outing with this group of bloggers.
I only ate about 1/3 of the dish, it was a HUGE bowl. The rest was packed for me to take home (yes, I’m one of those people, I eat my restaurant leftovers) and it made a lovely dinner the next day. It might have been even better the next day, perhaps more flavorful. I’ll definitely order this dish again.
The Blue Koi location mentioned in this post is located at 10581 Mission Road, Leawood, Kansas.
