Tomorrow, June 3rd, is National Donut Day, the High Holy Day for dedicated donut-vores.
A little bit of history for you donut eating-trivia fiends. National Donut Day was started in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army to honor the women, Lassies, who served donuts to soldiers in World War I. The Salvation Army first served donuts in 1917.
The following donut chains are offering free or free-with-a-purchase donuts on Friday, June 3rd:
Lamar’s Donuts is offering a free donut with a hole, no additional purchase required. If you feel inclined, you can make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I love their tagline for National Donut Day, “Imagine: a donut that doesn’t require any dough!”
Dunkin’ Donuts is offering a free donut with the purchase of any beverage.
Krispy Kreme is offering a free donut of any variety!
If you are looking for a really tasty donut that will cost you just a little dough on National Donut Day, here are my recommendations:
In the KC area, John’s Space Age donuts. While it’s debatable whether or not it is a donut, I highly suggest the apple fritter. I know I tell y’all to go there often, and that’s because it is really that good. Just go, you’ll understand!
In the NYC, L.A. and Disney World area, visit Babycakes for an AMAZING donut. Never mind that they are baked, gluten-free, vegan, free of refined sugar and soy and are kosher. I’ll bet you can’t tell the difference and will run back in to get another. Crazy good donuts.
Where do you plan to celebrate National Donut Day? I’d love to hear about it, tell me what you plan to eat!

We found an actual Krispy Kreme store in Pigeon Forge. The kids have begged to stop…now there is no excuse not to!
