As I mentioned in my Sweet of the Week #1 post, my friend Mary and her hubby went to Bittersweet Bakery in Eagen, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. The treats they brought back were too good not to share with you!
I should mention that I am not a fan of many gluten-free sweets. Many of the mixes I have tried have turned out so bad, I would rather go without a sweet. Most of the gluten-free bread products I have tried have a strange smell and taste. The only thing I can equate it to is the smell of a baby spitting up formula. Really–it reminds me of that smell. Ewww. Again, I’d rather go without. So I wasn’t holding out much hope for a gluten-free bakery that I had never seen mentioned on any of the gluten-free blogs I follow.
Well, this place should be mentioned. LOUDLY! With the plethora of goodies Mary brought to me, I created a small sweet smorgasbord equivalent to my sweet-a-week allowance. I had pumpkin bars with cream cheese, brownies, a monster cookie, a peanut butter cookie and a pumpkin Craisin muffin. The cookies were still a bit tricky to chew (still having problems with solid food–it’s sexy, I know) but the other goodies really hit the spot.
The brownies came highly recommended to Mary and the recommendation was a good one. They had a very fudge-like frosting and just the right gooey-ness. And none of that icky gluten-free flavor. The pumpkin bars were delicious with a super sweet cream cheese frosting that should be sold in bulk. Delicious! The cookies were impressive because they were not a crumbly mess. Even with the mass-produced gluten-free cookies at the grocery store, binding a cookie together without gluten seems to be difficult. The cookies at the store are always in a million pieces. Not these–they were perfectly formed cookies and it was hard to eat just a little bit of each.
My favorite of the goodies was the pumpkin Craisin muffin. I don’t know why I haven’t used Craisins in any of the pumpkin creations I make. They go together so nicely! The muffin was tasty, moist and not a crumbly mess. The folks at Bittersweet are on to something!
Should you find yourself in Minneapolis, go visit Bittersweet Bakery. Or maybe make a trip to Minneapolis just to visit Bittersweet Bakery. It’s that good. Even if you aren’t a gluten-free eater, go there. Really. It’s that good.
