Day 5, 40 Days of 40: Visit My Favorite Doctor

I’m aware that many of you don’t like going to the doctor.  I didn’t like to either for many years.

In fact, I used to hate going to the doctor. Those of you with Celiac disease or pretty severe gluten intolerance may relate to this.  I spent a couple of years pretty sick and no matter how many doctors I visited, I wasn’t getting better.  The diagnoses went from ridiculous (“Vegetarians simply aren’t healthy!”) to frightening (“The only thing I can think at this point is that you have colon cancer.”)

I was exasperated, sick and had barely enough energy to get moving, let alone track down yet another doctor.  My friend Sarah suggested that I visit Dr. Murray, an integrative health practitioner, an M.D. with a progressive outlook on health.

It took exactly two appointments with Dr. Murray for me to get on a solid path to health.  Sure, that path has included eliminating gluten and dairy, both challenging, but I’m much healthier now. I’m not taking a slew of ineffective prescription medications, I’m not feeling like I could faint in the middle of the grocery store, I’m able to absorb the nutrients in the food I eat.  And it’s actually pretty amazing that one doctor in two appointments could set straight what I had spent years chasing with traditional doctors.

So on my list of my favorite things is a visit to my doctor.  I no longer have the anxiety and frustration I used to have at the doctor.  Dr. Murray sees me promptly, always on time, and immediately sets out puzzle solving, listening to what’s going on and developing a plan of action.  I left the doctor’s office with a plan today.  I know I’ll get test results in the mail within just a few days and with just a few tweaks and adjustments, I’ll be even healthier.  How could this not be one of my favorite things?
