In my donut journey last year, my absolute favorite donut shop in the KC area was John’s Space Age Donuts. I was hesitant to visit it so early in the year, because I knew it was a sure thing. Nearly everyone I asked in the Johnson County area said I HAD to visit John’s. They were right, best apple fritter anywhere and the best vintage donut shop experience of the entire year. I love that is has been there since ‘Space Age’ meant something, I love the old formica countertop and the plastic coffee cup holders that sit atop the refrigerator. I love what it represents in donut culture: a single-location donut shop where the flavors are dictated by the baker, not by a corporate office thousands of miles away.
On May 19th, a new location of my least favorite national donut chain is opening within spitting distance of John’s Space Age. My guess is they will offer free donuts, causing a traffic jam on Metcalf. But there’s an alternative: join me and other donut fans a few blocks south at John’s Space Age on May 19th. Drop by on your way to work, grab a dozen to go or have a seat at the counter for a coffee and an apple fritter. Big thanks to KC Meesha for coordinating. There’s a Facebook page with more info. I hope to see you there!
Should you spot me at John’s, ask me for some 52 Donuts swag. I’ve got a few goodies to share with those who share my appreciation for all things donut.
