The Iowa State Fair claimed to have more than 50 Foods on a Stick. Prior to our trip, I went over the list several times, trying to find foods I could eat that would be both vegetarian and gluten-free. While there weren’t many, I did manage to find a few.
One stand had several varieties of Nut Rolls, available plain or dipped in chocolate. I chose the Pecan Nut Roll and of course, had it dipped in chocolate. It reminded me of the nut logs advertised on Stuckey’s billboards in the 70s. As a little kid, Stuckey’s fascinated me with their kitschy souvenirs and 99 cent nut logs. I don’t think I ever tried one, but I imagine they were very similar to the Pecan Nut Roll I had at the fair.
Inside of the nut log was white chewy nougat-y stuff which was rolled in pecans and then dipped in chocolate. I really love sweets, but this was simply too sweet. I had just a couple of bites of it. I tried to pawn it off on John, but he was already about 5 Foods on a Stick into his fair food adventure and politely declined my offer. It probably wasn’t such a great offer anyway, as the chocolate was starting to drip down my arm and the nuts were falling all over, including on a passerby’s flip flop.
