In 2012, instead of a 52 project, I did a 40+12 project, 40 Days of 40 Favorite Things for my 40th birthday plus 12 Adventures. This post is one such adventure. While it does not include a gluten-free or healthy recipe, it is part of my healthy approach to life lived well. I hope you’ll read along when I write about my adventures, they are an important part of the journey to health!
I’m an avid backyard gardener, but have never planted more than a dozen of anything.
Until this fall.
My friend Renee has a magic garden and a neon green thumb. Whatever she plants grows like crazy. When she was pulling out the summer crops from her garden, she asked me if I thought it was too late to plant a fall kale crop.
I thought it was worth a try, made a few phone calls and by day’s end, had 270-some kale plants in the back of the van.
We planted with Renee’s little cuties, her husband tilled the dirt ahead of us. We made tidy rows of green curly, lacinato and red borer kale. 271 plants in all.
And it grew! We even shared with friends and folks at the gym and neighbors and….well, anyone that would eat kale. Kale chips, kale juice, kale smoothies, sauteed kale. We had lots and lots of kale, organic-ish kale that has more flavor than any I’ve had before.
While I’m still not sure what quantity it takes to differentiate between a farm and a garden, this feels more like a farm. It was a terrific adventure. I can’t wait to try again in the Spring!
