Celiac Disease Awareness Month: It’s Not the Glyphosate
May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month. I’m sharing posts related to Celiac Disease this month, a chronic autoimmune disease which impacts 1 of 100 people. There is no cure and no medication. The treatment is complete avoidance of gluten.

I wanted to kick off this year’s posts by discussing glyphosate and other herbicides used as pre-harvest dessicants (drying agents). It is nearly impossible to read any posts on social media related to eating gluten free or having a gluten-related illness without someone chiming in that it isn’t actually the gluten, but instead the use of glyphosate in farming that is causing gluten-related health issues.
When it comes to Celiac disease, this is not true.
Celiac disease existed and was identified long before glyphosate was invented. It is a genetic autoimmune disease, not a condition created by the use of chemicals in agriculture. There is no proven causal link between glyphosate and celiac disease.
It would be helpful for those who have gluten-related medical conditions if we could stop spreading misinformation and focus instead on solid science.
