Hello and welcome to my very first blog post. Here’s the full scoop on my 52 Donuts project.
I have a thing for donuts. I grew up visiting Dunkin’ Donuts every time we “went to town,” which was 45 minutes away. From those visits came my love for donuts, eating at a counter and time spent chatting over a donut and bad coffee.
In 2009, I have chosen to eat only one sweet each week, plus a free day on my birthday when sweets won’t count. As a hard core right-brainer, I have to find a way to tie my small goals to a larger purpose, otherwise I quickly lose interest.
To combine my love of donuts and the Sweet-a-Week goal, I decided to seek out 52 different donuts and share the weekly adventure with a friend. Each week I’ll post a little something about the donut experience and occasionally a fellow donut lover will post about our adventures, too.

Hi! I just came across your blog from makingafoodie. Loves it!! I have to second Big Momma’s in Raytown. Though I haven’t had their donuts, while I was in the hospital last year on bedrest (pregnant with triplets!), I was CRAVING cinnamon rolls – surely a cousin to the donut – and my dad brought me a box of three cinnamon rolls, each as big as my head. It seriously took me three days to finish one roll, but DANG it was deeee-lish.
Also, though I have not been there, a friend told me about VooDoo Donuts in Portland, Oregon, and I would love to go. Anyhoo – happy eating!

Big Momma’s is on the list to try soon, although I hear it needs to be a Saturday trip since they are closed on Donut Sunday. And I agree–cinnamon rolls are absolutely a cousin to the donut!
I have not been to VooDoo yet either, although it is on my wish list. I’m thinking we might need to arrange a Donut Devotee pilgrimage to Portland! There is a new donut shop in Wichita, The Donut Whole, offering similar flavors to VooDoo, including Maple Bacon. I hope to visit them soon!
You really must try the doughnuts from the Kohen Bakery in Butler, Missouri (660-679-6221
101 S Orange St, Butler, MO 64730). This bakery is owned/run by Mennonites, so call ahead for hours/days (I remember being sorely disappointed to find them closed on a Sunday several years ago), but their doughnuts outrank any others I’ve ever had…

I like Mr. D’s donuts at 75th and Nieman, Shawnee KS. They have excellent german chocolate cake donuts and cinnamon twists. For that matter, everything is good. Not to mention chocolate milk in those little cartons a la elementary school cafeterias. I love it.
