The weekend is quickly approaching and that calls for a treat in my world. How about Bourbon Ginger Beer Floats? If possible, these are even better than the classic root beer float.
Long a fan of ginger beer, I only recently stumbled across “hard” or alcoholic ginger beer, one with an alcohol content high enough to sneak up on you, transforming you into the evening’s entertainment for your entire neighborhood. But what the heck, how about adding a little bourbon, too? The ginger beer I used in this recipe is brewed by Root Sellers, which is from my part of the country. They are also making a hard root beer that is crazy good. Check them out and keep your eye on their distribution list, as it’s getting larger every time I look. If you can’t find an alcoholic ginger beer in your neck of the woods, I like Reed’s Ginger Beer in this concoction.
I used Blanton’s single barrel bourbon in these floats. You use the bourbon that you like best though, okay? I’ve learned from my Kentucky friends that it’s impolite to talk bad about any bourbon. One should instead share what they like best instead of dismissing any of Kentucky’s fine bourbons. That’s right, I said Kentucky’s fine bourbons. It is of my opinion it isn’t bourbon unless it comes from Kentucky, but I won’t argue about that either…at least not today.
And about the ice cream: I finally snagged some of the new So Delicious cashew milk non-dairy frozen dessert. Oh my goodness. It is by far the creamiest of the non-dairy ice creams I’ve tried and no one would know it’s non-dairy. But I ate it all before I made these floats to photograph. Guess what? Almost as good with the coconut milk variety. If you can find the cashew near you, that’s my first recommendation. Otherwise, go with what floats your boat. Ha–get it? Floats? No? Well, ok…I’ll stick to recipes and fewer corny jokes.
Bourbon Ginger Beer Floats (gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan)
Ingredients
- 1-16 ounce can hard ginger beer (I used Root Sellers. You can sub non-alcoholic ginger beer from Reed's if you prefer)
- 4 scoops non-dairy ice cream of your choices
- 3 ounces Bourbon
- 2 glasses
- 2 large paper straws
Instructions
-
Start with two glasses.
-
In each glass, place 1.5 ounces of Bourbon.
-
Top with two scoops of ice cream in each glass.
-
Pour hard ginger beer over the top of the ice cream.
-
Put a large diameter paper straw in each class and give it a quick stir to mix in the Bourbon. Serve and enjoy responsibly! (You probably shouldn't drive after having one of these, not even the riding lawnmower in laps around your neighbor's yard...)

These are such cool drinks! I don’t love ginger beer in everything, but I bet I’d love it in this float. Well, I’ve never met a float I didn’t like. 😉

I had never had an alcoholic ginger beer before. This one is good, but not quite as ginger-y as some. Agreed on floats!
