Tomorrow is National Ice Cream Day. While you could get out in the heat to grab free ice cream at any of the many places offering, you could stay at home and mix up your own two ingredient peanut butter banana ice cream.
While this will certainly be enjoyed by your human family members, this ice cream is a HUGE hit with my dogs. Have you met my furkids over on Instagram? I have four of the world’s most extraordinarily smart, adorable, lovable pooches, all adopted. Go see for yourself, I’m not biased. {wink} I may even overshare photos of their cuteness, including their affinity for ice cream. I don’t like feeding them lots of dairy and sugar, so we make this frozen treat at home.
The nice folks at Personal Creations sent me these ice cream bowls. How cute! I got to pick which dog icon I wanted on each bowl, plus their names. While these are perfect for ice cream, I’m most excited about giving these as gifts to my friends when they adopt a new furry family member. Loaded up with dog treats, these are going to be well received presents.
To make this ice cream, you only need two ingredients: bananas and peanut butter. Buy peanut butter that contains just a couple of ingredients, peanuts and oil. Skip the stuff with palm oil, sugar and other things that don’t belong in peanut butter. It tastes better that way! You can make this in either a high speed blender or a food processor. I use the blender since it sits out on my counter all the time. You can freeze this in single serve portions in little containers like these or you can make it all in one container and use an ice cream scoop. Both ways work great, but we use the single container method here most often since we like making scoops for ourselves and our dogs; it feels more like eating “real” ice cream, not this healthy and good for the entire family (dogs included) variation.
Happy National Ice Cream Day to your whole family. I can’t wait to hear and see how you celebrate!
Two Ingredient Peanut Butter Banana Ice Cream For Your Dogs (and you)
Ingredients
- 8 bananas
- 1 cup all-natural peanut butter , creamy
Instructions
-
Peel and slice each banana.
-
Place slices on a baking sheet and freeze until firm.
-
Put frozen banana slices in high speed blender, such as a VitaMix or Blendtec or bowl of food processor fitted with an "S" blade. Start on low, gradually increasing speed to high. Process just long enough that bananas are creamy. The texture will be similar to soft serve ice cream.
-
Mix in peanut butter at this point. I prefer stirring in by hand. Processing any longer makes the banana mixture more warm, less frozen.
-
Spread mixture into an 8 x 8 baking dish. While mixture could be eaten now and will be the consistency of starting-to-melt soft serve ice cream, I prefer it a bit more solid. Place baking dish in freezer and freeze a minimum of two hours. I like it frozen overnight.
-
Alternatively, you can portion this out into individual servings at this time, placing it into small containers like this. This recipe makes a minimum of 8 generous servings. Decide on the serving size based on the size and appetite of your dogs or humans.

I am curious if Sonny would eat this ice cream. He’s never expressed any interest in anything sweet. No matter though as I know I would eat it! 😉

So I heard peanut butter was bad for dogs. Can you substitute the peanut butter with pumpkin puree?
Johnna says
I’m not sure where you would have heard peanut butter is bad for dogs. Many dog treats are made with peanut butter. You should be careful to choose a peanut butter that is not sweetened with xylitol which is dangerous for dogs, but any natural peanut butter is fine for dogs. (Please check with your veterinarian about your pet’s food needs.)
