Donuts in 2011

January 30, 2011 By Johnna Leave a Comment

Happy New Year! It’s almost February and I have not had any donuts in the New Year worth writing about. Soon I will but in the meantime… Here’s an article from the NY Times about Boozy Donuts, an off-the menu item at Flex Mussels. If you have tried them, I would love to hear from…

Sweet of the Week #2i, Root Beer Float Cupcakes

January 28, 2011 By Johnna 2 Comments

This week’s Ingredient is Root Beer.  I used two variations on Root Beer, both local to the Kansas City area. In the frosting and the ice cream, I used Shatto Dairy’s Root Beer Milk.*  A glass bottle of this milk is always in my refrigerator.  A favorite of my husband, it tastes like a melted…

Snowy Pirouettes

January 11, 2011 By Johnna 2 Comments

Surprise!  It’s an extra Sweet this week.  It doesn’t feature one of the 52 Ingredients chosen for the year, just a bonus treat on a snowy day. This afternoon two of my neighbors were having a duel with their snowblowers, battling to see who could clear all of the sidewalks and driveways on our street…

Sweet of the Week #1i, Orange Flax Muffins

January 8, 2011 By Johnna 1 Comment

This week’s Ingredient is Flax Seed.  I occasionally use flax seed meal as an egg replacement and I eat milled flax seed almost everyday sprinkled on hot cereal.  It’s a great way for a vegetarian to add a little Omega 3 to the diet. Until making these muffins, I had never built a recipe around…

The Ingredients For 2011’s 52 Project

January 8, 2011 By Johnna 4 Comments

I asked for your input, readers and friends, and you have provided me with a terrific list.  You’ve challenged me with ingredients I have never heard of, ingredients I’ve tasted but never baked with, ingredients I already love but will use in a new way and few that intimidate me.  My hope is to use…

Banana Nutella Stuffed French Toast, dairy and gluten-free

January 4, 2011 By Johnna 1 Comment

Last year I shared this recipe for Baked French Toast.  I really like this recipe because it can be made the night before and with the quick addition of a little syrup-y concoction on top in the morning, it goes right into the oven for breakfast. Super easy! Last week Jillian from Udi’s Gluten Free…

A New 52 Project for 2011

January 3, 2011 By Johnna Leave a Comment

52 Donuts, done!  52 Sweets, done!  52 Foods on a Stick…well, I’m working on it.  The foods were all eaten, now to share photos.  But anyway…about 2011.  I’ve got another project lined up and I need your help. I discovered this year I really do enjoy baking.  I’ve always known that, but have discovered a…

Sweet of the Week #52, Divinity with Donna

January 3, 2011 By Johnna 1 Comment

If you came here hoping for a recipe this week, there isn’t one.  There have been a few baking failures around here this year.  Most I don’t mention or I re-make them, baking and re-baking to figure out what went wrong, sharing the version that actually works.  This time I had an absolute failure that…

Sweet of the Week #51, Secret Ingredient Cookies with Bentley and Connie

December 31, 2010 By Johnna Leave a Comment

My idea list for baking projects is never short.  A stack of cookbooks sits on my coffee table, my bookmarked list of recipes that have caught my eye is lengthy.  Yet I didn’t plan out all 52 Sweets in advance, I often waited for spur of the moment inspiration.  Wouldn’t you know the idea for…

Sweet of the Week #50, Bourbon Pecan Fig Pop Tarts with Jenny

December 30, 2010 By Johnna 2 Comments

Toasted on the Left, Parbaked on the Right I like single-serve treats, as well as just about anything single-serve I can freeze and re-heat one of later.  That was the plan with these pop tarts, parbake them, freeze and then toast as craved.  Yeah. That was the plan.  None of these made it to the…
