Pumpkin Donuts

September 25, 2012 By Johnna Leave a Comment

Don’t these look tempting? Baked pumpkin cake donuts, hot from the oven… And they are nearly guilt-free.   Gluten-free.  Egg-free.  Dairy-free.  Refined sugar-free.  Perfectly delicious, brushed with maple syrup and sprinkled with a little coconut sugar and cinnamon. I’ll be sharing the recipe in my Power of Pumpkin class on Monday, October 1st in Liberty, MO. …

A New Outlook on 9/11

September 11, 2012 By Johnna 3 Comments

A brief interruption from my normal food/travel/adventure blogging…I’ll return soon with a recipe but today I’ve got something to say… This morning I went to see a DC-3 airplane lifted by a crane, placed atop The Roasterie, my favorite coffee roaster in Kansas City. It was an incredible site.   A few hundred folks gathered…

Socca Pizza, Super Simple, Super Good!

September 10, 2012 By Johnna 11 Comments

Last month I had a wonderful gluten-free meal with Debi from Hunter’s Lyonesse in Louisville, Kentucky. It was such a treat to see Debi while I was working out of town for two weeks. There’s something very centering in sharing a meal with someone who understands your diet and obsession with food. During dinner, I…

August 31, 2012 By Johnna Leave a Comment

While not on a stick, this one is definitely worth a mention here. The Kentucky State Fair had Deep Fried Girl Scout Cookies this year. Authentic Girl Scout cookies were dipped in a funnel cake batter and fried for about 30 seconds on each side. I paid $7 for a sampler of six cookies. Included…

How Did I Live Without This? Calphalon Digital Convection Oven

August 8, 2012 By Johnna Leave a Comment

Earlier this week I received a Calphalon Electric Extra Large Digital Convection Oven to use in my baking classes. It seemed like it would be handy when I’m teaching in a space without a full size oven and it’s portable. What I didn’t expect was that I would find a place for this in my…

I Ate Here: Pure Juice in Gladstone, MO (Closed)

August 7, 2012 By Johnna Leave a Comment

UPDATE 05/07/13:  Pure Juice appears to be closed in this location.  Today I visited a fun new juice spot in Kansas City’s Northland, Pure Juice. Located in an office building near 72nd and North Oak Trafficway, Pure Juice is a hidden surprise.  Don’t let the exterior fool you, the office building is full of other…
